GDF Suez starts wind energy race in France

PARIS, May 19 (UPI) -- French energy company GDF Suez said it was eyeing a series of partnerships and acquisitions to help develop as much as 3,000 megawatts of wind energy at home.

"GDF Suez will answer the call for tenders issued by the French state in January 2011 to develop 3,000 MW of offshore wind turbines by 2015," the company said in a statement.

The company, the wind power leader in France, teamed up with industrial companies Areva and Vinci to work together on advancing offshore wind potential. The acquisition of MAIA EolMer, a company described as a leader in the study and development of offshore wind, would help create an industrial sector based on renewable energy, GDF Suez added.

The French energy giant said it has 1,000 MW of wind power already installed in France.

The French government, meanwhile, set of goal of 6,000 MW of installed wind capacity by 2020. Five offshore wind farms are planned for the French coast.
