British nuclear sector gets good marks

LONDON, May 18 (UPI) -- Nuclear safety mechanisms in the United Kingdom are working adequately, the British energy secretary said after a study of Japan's nuclear disaster.

Chief inspector Mike Weightman in an interim report to members of the British Parliament finds there is a strong safety culture in place in the country. It's not necessary, he said, to make safety improvements to nuclear reactors operating in the United Kingdom.

Weightman said the tsunami and earthquake that crippled the Fukushima nuclear plant aren't credible threats in the United Kingdom. He added, however, that efforts to improve the nuclear energy sector "must never stop."

British Energy Secretary Chris Huhne, said, regardless of the findings, safety is the "No. 1 priority" in the country.

"I want regulators and the industry to work together so that we continue to improve our safety regime," he added.

Scientists from the International Atomic Energy Agency are planning a fact-finding mission to Japan to examine the Fukushima nuclear plant crippled by a magnitude-9 quake in March.
