Gazprom builds gas pipeline for 2014 games

MOSCOW, May 11 (UPI) -- Russian energy company Gazprom said it finished linking two natural gas pipelines that will secure energy supplies for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

Gazprom announced Friday it finished linking the offshore and onshore section of the Dzhubga-Lazarevskoye-Sochi natural gas pipeline.

The pipeline is included as part of Moscow's plans for the Olympic facilities at the mountain resort of Sochi.

The gas pipeline will stretch some 110 miles with about 10 miles of that running along the bottom of the Black Sea. It is designed to carry about 134 billion cubic feet of natural gas per year.

In March, Russian police arrested four protesters who were complaining that officials near the Olympic resort were "illegally seizing unique wildlife areas on Russia's Black Sea coast."

The World Wildlife Fund said it wants the Russian Interior Ministry to look into the arrests, adding protests have been aimed at construction projects in the area in preparation for the Games.
