Pakistan downplays TAPI security concerns

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 4 (UPI) -- There aren't any security concerns related to a planned natural gas pipeline from Turkmenistan, a Pakistan energy official said.

New Delhi hosted a multilateral meeting last week on the proposed Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India natural gas pipeline. Indian officials during the meetings said they were concerned about the security of the pipeline as it passed through Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Asim Hussain, an adviser to the Pakistani Energy Ministry, told the Press Trust of India that security really wasn't an issue with the $7.6 billion pipeline.

"I don't think security is an issue. This was never raised in the meeting which we had few days ago," he was quoted as saying. "Neither the Afghan side showed any concern, nor did the Pakistan side, nor India, as far as security is concerned."

Delegates at the TAPI meeting last week expressed support for the project but couldn't agree on gas prices or transit fees. Another meeting is scheduled for Kabul in the coming days.
