Seoul moves deeper into Middle East energy

DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia, March 18 (UPI) -- South Korea's Samsung Engineering was selected to build a natural gas recovery facility in Saudi Arabia, an oil company said.

Saudi Aramco, the state-run oil company in the kingdom, said it picked Samsung to perform the engineering, procurement and construction for the Shaybah natural gas liquids program.

The work encompasses construction of various facilities for four gas oil separation plants and "other associated facilities," the Saudi company said.

"In line with Saudi Aramco's corporate objectives to meet its commitment for the supply of gas to the local market, the company is building a grassroots natural gas liquid recovery plant at the Shaybah Field in Rub' al-Khali, also known as the Empty Quarter," the company said in a statement.

South Korea announced earlier this week that starting in 2014 it will join Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. for its first foray into the kingdom's lucrative oil market. The $97 billion deal gives South Korea access to the fourth-largest crude oil producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries alongside other international oil companies.

South Korea is Asia's fourth-largest buyer of crude oil.
