$12 million set for Indiana oil cleanup

WASHINGTON, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- A group of 13 potentially responsible parties agreed to pay at least $12 million to help clean an Indiana site contaminated with oil, the U.S. EPA announced.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency joined the U.S. Department of Justice and Indiana regulatory agencies in a proposed settlement with 13 parties connected to a waste oil recycler closed in 1987.

The Cam-Or facility operated in Westville, Ind., from 1934-87. It was placed on the EPA's Superfund list in 1998.

The potentially responsible parties at Cam-Or will provide $12 million to complete cleanup work for ground water and soil contaminated with chemical byproducts and heavy metals, the EPA said in a statement.

The group agreed to pay the EPA another $2.4 million to cover administrative and other related coasts. A separate undisclosed financial sum will help Indiana cover oversight costs during the cleanup operation.

Design for the cleanup work is scheduled for 2011 with cleanup target for 2012.
