Construction is expected to be completed by 2013 and the wind farm will churn out more than 100,000 megawatts of energy each year.

The Energy Ministry in Sofia announced recently that it was preparing a renewable energy source act. Renewables would account for 16 percent of the final consumption of energy by 2020 and 10 percent in transport under the measure.

Bulgarian Energy Minister Traicho Traikov said in the wake of the announcement that construction started on a 45-megawatt solar farm in central Bulgaria.

The European Union has similar renewable targets for 2020, including sweeping reductions in greenhouse gases emissions.
