Mixed reports on Britain's wind sector

GLASGOW, Scotland, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- The renewable energy sector in Great Britain is behind its European counterparts but the trend may be reversing, analysts said at a Scottish energy summit.

Keith Anderson, the director of renewable energy for energy company ScottishPower, said during an energy conference in Glasgow that more effort was needed to push the green energy sector forward in the region.

"The outlook for onshore wind in England and Wales doesn't look particularly bright," he was quoted by the Platts news service as saying. "We need to see the delivery of grid investments and we need a clear and transparent planning system."

Energy executives in the European wind sector, however, said Great Britain might be able to link its offshore wind sector to the European electrical grid with the proper long-term strategies.

Great Britain gets about 2 percent of its energy needs from renewable resources. It added 1 gigawatt of wind power to its grid from 2009-10 and is expecting further advancements, Platts added.
