EU presses for energy security strategy

BRUSSELS, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- European member states should combat climate change and work toward energy diversity as part of a comprehensive energy strategy, lawmakers said.

Members of the European Parliament called on member states to focus on energy efficiency and diversity as part of an energy strategy for the coming decade.

Lawmakers in a report from Brussels urged the European community to exploit opportunities to ease Europe's energy dependency, combat climate change and find better ways to reduce energy costs.

"Diversifying supply sources could help in dealing with future supply crises," lawmakers said in a parliamentary statement.

Member states, lawmakers said, must do more to make projects like the planned Nabucco natural gas pipeline a reality.

Europe aims to break Russia's grip on the regional energy sector with Nabucco by bringing non-Russian gas through Turkey. The project enjoys widespread political support, though potential suppliers are slow to commit.

Lawmakers added that member states should devise an energy action plan that is designed to cut energy savings by at least 20 percent at the EU level.
