DETROIT, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- The Michigan Public Service Commission approved a biomass fuel and a landfill gas facility for the state, utility company Detroit Edison announced.
Detroit Edison reached a 20-year deal for the production of wood waste biofuels at a former coal-burning facility in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The utility company will purchase 17 megawatts of energy from the facility.
A separate 20-year deal in southeast Michigan is for 3 MW of energy production from landfill gas captured from a nearby landfill in Oakland County.
The two projects together will generate enough power for 14,000 homes, the Michigan utility said in a statement.
Detroit Edison said it expects most of its renewable energy in the state to come from wind farms, however.
The utility company said 10 percent of its energy production would come from renewable resources by 2015.
