HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Pennsylvania can build a 21st-century green economy with grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the governor said.
Washington in 2009 adopted a $787 billion stimulus bill -- known formally as the American Recovery Reinvestment Act -- to pump billions of dollars into the national economy in an effort to stave off an economic depression.
Pennsylvania companies through ARRA received more than $800 million for green energy projects. Pennsylvania's Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell said his state ranks third in the nation for green energy.
Pennsylvania, through the stimulus, advanced $228 million in investments to bring 100 megawatts of wind energy online in the state.
Rendell said the move toward renewable energy resources is not only socially responsible but also contributes to the economic well-being of his state.
The Pennsylvania's Conservation Works! grant program will save more than 570 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, reduce natural gas consumption by 2.1 billion cubic feet and generate power by alternative means, the governor said.
