UNIDO, Beijing team up on solar energy

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A joint effort between Beijing and the United Nations on solar power research will facilitate the use of green energy in the developing world, officials said.

The U.N. Industrial Development Organization launched with Beijing its International Solar Energy Center under the banner of "One sun, one world, one dream."

The facility in western China aims to promote and facilitate the use of solar energy in the developing world, UNIDO said.

Edward Clarence-Smith, the UNIDO envoy to China, said China is leading the world in solar water heaters and photovoltaic technology.

"But more importantly for UNIDO, China has available solar energy technologies that can be easily transferred to other developing countries with the necessary skills to use them," he said.

He noted that, with its booming economy, Beijing understands a sustainable future relies on sustainable energy.

The ISEC facility has 10 laboratories working on solar energy technology. Xi Wenhua, the director general at ISEC, said work at the facility advances green energy technology and energy security.

"Looking ahead, solar energy and other renewable energy industries have a promising and challenging future and ISEC will continue to work closely with the developing and the developed countries," he said.
