TOKYO, April 10 (UPI) -- The Japanese government announced plans for a greenhouse gas panel.
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party launched the panel to discuss measures that could help Japan meet its Kyoto Protocol goals of reducing carbon emissions.
The panel will hold discussions on promoting a national movement, supporting technology transfer measures and implementing an emissions-trading system.
Takeshi Noda, the head of the panel, said he hopes the panel will be able to support the government's climate change efforts.
The panel plans to meet once or twice a week and hopes to sum up their discussions around June, said Yoriko Kawaguchi, former environment minister who serves as the panel's secretary general. It will also bring in some climate change experts for its discussions, Kyoto News Service reported.
Under the Kyoto agreement, Japan is required to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average 6 percent from the 1990 levels between 2008 and 2012.
