HOUSTON, April 5 (UPI) -- A drilling program off the coast of Mozambique gives Anadarko Petroleum Corp. more confidence in its liquefied natural gas program, a corporate official said.
Anadarko, which has headquarters in Texas, announced that it encountered roughly 525 net feet of natural gas pay in the Barquentine-4 well off the coast of Mozambique.
Bob Daniels, senior vice president for worldwide exploration at Anadarko, said those "outstanding results" and the "vast extents of this accumulation" would move it closer to the development of LNG in the region.
"Our next step is to mobilize the drillship to the northern section of our block to begin testing additional high-potential exploration prospects that may expand the resource even further and provide tieback opportunities for future LNG hub facilities," he said in a statement.
The entire field, named Prosperidade, lies in roughly 5,400 feet of water. It is estimated to hold recoverable resources of at least 17 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
Anadarko in November announced its Barquentine-3 appraisal well off the coast of Mozambique has at least 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in place, twice the size of the previous estimate.
