WARSAW, Poland, June 22 (UPI) -- Berlin has given assurances the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea won't block development of Polish ports, the Polish prime minister said.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the Nord Stream pipeline won't block development plans for ports in Swinoujscie and Szczecin.
"We've gotten confirmation at the top political level, in documents, that if Poland decides to deepen the waterway that leads to the ports in Swinoujscie and Szczecin, the German side will take appropriate action to remove any obstacle," Tusk was quoted by The Wall Street Journal as saying.
An energy consortium led by Russian gas company Gazprom announced Tuesday it was nearly finished building the twin Nord Stream natural gas pipeline. It would stretch more than 700 miles through the Baltic Sea to Germany.
Warsaw wants to build a terminal for liquefied natural gas at its ports. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said following talks with Tusk in Warsaw that Berlin isn't interested in blocking its neighbor's development, "especially not against our neighbor Poland."
