Nissan picks British Gas as Leaf charger

LONDON, March 2 (UPI) -- British consumers will have access to cleaner sources of transportation through a partnership with Nissan and British Gas, a managing director said Wednesday.

Japanese automotive company Nissan chose British Gas as its preferred supplier for charging stations meant for its Leaf electric vehicle in the United Kingdom.

"We want our customers to use greener and cheaper energy," said Phil Bentley, managing director of British Gas, in a statement. "Partnering with Nissan on powering their electric cars is a very exciting driver of growth for British Gas as electric vehicles move into the mainstream."

A report commissioned by British Gas found that electric vehicles could make up 10 percent of the regional market by 2020.

Nissan notes the Leaf has a range of around 100 miles on a full charge that costs around $3.25. Gasoline during the Libyan crisis is nearly $10 per gallon in parts of Britain.

British Gas is tasked with installing charging points at residential and commercial buildings at the cost of around $1,600 a piece for consumers.
