British builder moves snake from road in Australia

June 4 (UPI) -- A British builder living and working in Australia got a taste of the local flavor when he was called upon to prod a large snake out of a raod.

James "Jimmy" Shepherd said he was getting ready to go home from a Callinan Bricklaying job site in Redhead, New South Wales, when he saw a car making unusual movements in the parking lot.

"We were wrapping up for the day and I saw a car leaving the car park," the Briton, who has been living in Australia for three years, told the Newcastle Herald. "It kind of left the exit, but then reversed back towards it and parked up."

Shepherd said he was approaching his own car when the driver approached him.

"She said, 'excuse me, there's a snake on the road over there,'" Shepherd recalled. "She's like, 'I notice you've got a level, I'm just wondering whether you can just poke it out off the road.'"

Shepherd said he decided to give it a shot, despite his apprehensions.

"I said, 'you do realize you've picked the only Englishman in the area?'" he joked.

Shepherd recorded video as he prodded at the snake with his level and encouraged it to move out of the street.

The bricklayer said he enlisted the help of some of his Australian coworkers to advise him as he prodded the serpent out of the road.

"I got it out of the way, I gathered a little bit of a crowd, quite a lot of cars stopping and people cheering me," Shepherd said.

Shepherd said in a Facebook post that the snake is believed to have been a 5-foot diamond python.
