Lawsuit filed in Houston mall mishap

HOUSTON, Feb. 27 -- Relatives of two women killed in the Jan. 30 collapse of a wall at a Houston shopping mall have filed a lawsuit in state district court. Attorneys filed the lawsuit Wednesday, alleging negligent acts by mall owners, operators and demolishing crews.

Three people died and six others were injured in the accident at Northline Mall. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of relatives of Leola Ann Edwards, 59, and Emma Jean Curtis, 63. They were killed while walking for exercise at the mall when a wall collapsed during a demolition project. A vacant department store was torn down to make way for construction of a Magic Johnson Theater. The suit names 13 defendants and blames them for negligent acts such as creating a dangerous setting, failing to warn people of the danger and failing to have a safe demolition plan. Defendants include Northline Joint Venture and its owners as well as Demolition Services Inc. ---
