Yellen appointed to economic council

BERKELEY, Calif., Dec. 20 -- Janet Yellen, a professor on leave from the University of California at Berkeley's Haas School of Business, has been named by President Clinton to head the Council of Economic Advisers. Yellen, 50, serves as governor of the Federal Reserve Board and has been on leave from UC Berkeley since 1994.

If confirmed by Congress, she will succeed Joseph Stiglitz, who is leaving to become the chief economist at the World Bank. Yellen's work has often focused on federal economic policy issues, and her colleagues describe her as collegial, persuasive and effective. Andrew Rose, a professor of business administration says, 'She is very low-key, but impresses people quickly with the depth of her understanding and the sincerity of her views.' Yellen is a former faculty member at Harvard University and the London School of Economics. She graduated from Brown University in economics and received her doctorate in economics from Yale. As head of the council, Yellen would follow in the footsteps of UC Berkeley professor Laura D'Andrea Tyson, who was Clinton's first chairwoman of the council. Tyson went on to become chairwoman of the National Economic Council and will return to UC Berkeley in January as a professor of business and economics. ---NEWLN:Copyright 1996 by United Press International.NEWLN:All rights reserved.
