D'Angelo, TLC top Soul Train Awards

LOS ANGELES, March 29 -- R&B newcomer D'Angelo and trio TLC were the big winners Friday at the 10th annual Soul Train Music Awards, taking home three awards each. D'Angelo's honors included best R&B/soul or rap new artist, best R& B/soul male single, and best R&B/soul male album, all for 'Brown Sugar. ' TLC won best R&B/soul album by a group, band or duo for 'CrazySexyCool,' the recording that brought the girl group one of its two Grammys last month. TLC also picked up the awards for best R&B/soul single by a group, band or duo and best R&B/soul or rap video, both for 'Waterfalls.' Other winners included Whitney Houston, the Notorious B.I.G., and Mary J. Blige. Michael Jackson and Monica, who had three nominations each, did not win any categories. Singer Patti LaBelle received the Heritage Award, and the Sammy Davis Jr. Entertainer of the Year honor went to foursome Boyz II Men. The ceremonies, televised live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, were hosted by past winner Anita Baker, LL COol J, and Brandy.
