Ind. deaths called work of serial killer

GARY, Ind., Nov. 8 -- Authorities said Wednesday they believe a single serial killer is responsible for a string of deaths in and around Gary, Ind. The badly decomposed body of the 10th victim, an unidentified woman, was found Wednesday, Gary Police Chief Joseph Slay said.

Slay told a news conference that authorities were convinced the deaths are the work of the same person. 'Do we believe that a serial killer has been at work in this area? I would have to be truthful and say, 'Yes,'' Slay said. But before Slay and Gary Mayor Thomas Barnes could announce a suspect, they were halted by a gag order issued by a judge in Portage County, Ind. The request was filed by attorneys for Portage County Jail inmate Eugene Britt, who is awaiting trial on charges he killed 8-year-old Sarah Paulsen in Laporte, Ind., on Aug. 22. Britt is a parolee who earlier served 13 years in prison for rape. The Gary killings, 10 people found slain in less than a year, have baffled police. None of the victims have been identified, and all had been raped and strangled. Most of the bodies have been found in abandoned buildings.
