S.Korea's Pusan to host Asian Games

SEOUL, May 23 -- Pusan, South Korea's second largest city, was picked Tuesday as the venue of the 14th Asian Games to be held in 2002.

Pusan and Kaohsiung of Taiwan competed for the right to host the 2002 Asian Games when the Olympic Council held its 14th General Assembly in Seoul. Seoul was favored by 37 of the 41 member of the council. It will be the second Asian Games to be staged in South Korea. In 1986 Seoul successfully hosted the 10th Asiad. South Korean sports officials said Taiwan's bid to take the 2002 Asian Games to Kaohsiung faced strong objections from China, which threatened to boycott the Asian sports festival if it is held on the Nationalist Chinese territory.
