Closing arguments Wednesday in Bobbitt penis-severing case

MANASSAS, Va. -- John Wayne Bobbitt told jurors Tuesday he felt his wife fondle him after they had sex, but then felt his penis ripped from his body as his wife cut him with an eight-inch kitchen knife.

Bobbitt, whose severed penis later was surgically reattached, is charged with marital sexual assault on his wife Lorena, 24, who contends he raped her before she cut him. Closing arguments are planned Wednesday.

In 90 minutes of testimony, Bobbitt, 26, said he remembered mounting his wife and remembered her sitting on the bed 'fondling me with my penis.'

'I seen her fondling my penis and I closed my eyes,' he said. He said he thought she wanted to continue having sex, but said he was unable to perform.

'I opened my eyes and felt a jerk and she just ripped it off my body,' he said. The organ was successfully reattached in a 9 -hour operation.

John Bobbitt has pleaded innocent to a felony charge of marital sexual assault.

A jury of nine women and three men is hearing the case before Judge Leroy Millette Jr. in Prince William County Circuit Court. Commonwealth's Attorney Paul B. Ebert and defense lawyer Gregory Murphy are to deliver their closing arguments Wednesday morning.

The prosecution offered 3 hours of testimony from seven witnesses, while the defense presented 4 hours of testimony from 13 witnesses during the two days of the trial.

Lorena Bobbitt, a manicurist who is a native of Ecuador and grew up in Venezuela, faces her own trial Nov. 29 on a charge of malicious wounding. If convicted, both Bobbitts could face up to 20 years in prison.

While Lorena Babbitt alleges she was raped June 23 before the cutting, her husband's defense lawyer contends she fabricated the story.

Witnesses differed Tuesday on whether the panties worn by Lorena Bobbitt the night of the cutting had been torn by force.

Myron P. Scholberg of the Commonwealth of Virginia Northern Lab in Fairfax testified a microscopic analysis of the underwear a 5 -inch tear along the waistband and a 3-inch tear down the right side, indicating force was used.

But a defense forensic witness, Morris S. Clark, a consultant who is a former FBI technician, testified his microscopic exam showed the tear had been started by a scissors cut.

In other testimony Tuesday, Lorena Bobbitt testified her husband while raping her June 19 called out the names of other women with whom he said he had had sex.

'He said the names when he was raping me,' she said.

Ebert showed John Bobbitt a list of names and Bobbitt identified the handwriting as his. Check marks beside some of the names indicated women with whom Bobbitt said he had sex.

'You loved to torment her and make her resist you,' Ebert said to Bobbitt.

Bobbitt responded he made the list in May as he and his wife were having marital difficulties.

'We were not getting along. I made the list of women I'd been associated with in my entire life and thought about how I'd be compatible with them,' he said. Bobbitt has been living in Niagara Falls, N.Y., with his parents since the incident while his wife is living in Fairfax, Va.

A divorce suit Lorena Bobbitt filed July 9 is pending. The couple had agreed to separate before the cutting.
