Man kills 2, wounds 5 in bar shooting spree

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- An angry gunman with grenades attached to his body opened fire in bar, killing two people and wounding five others before being shot and wounded by police, authorities said Sunday.

One of the victims shot in the bar, Paul Klein, 40, died Sunday at 7 a.m. after undergoing surgery, police said. Klein was shot in the chest and abdomen.

Eugene Baylis, 42, of Colorado Springs, first entered the Star Bar Saturday night wielding a handgun, police spokeswoman Judy Drake said. After a short skirmish with the doorman, Baylis was thrown out. But he managed to force his way back into the bar shortly before 9 p.m. and began firing, Drake said.

Baylis then fled to the next door parking lot of the Country Harvest Restaurant where he continued to shoot at anyone near him.

Baylis shot a 33-year-old man in the chest and head several times. The man died at the scene. The victim's name has not been released pending notification of his family, Drake said.

Shortly afterward, police officer James Rau confronted Baylis in his truck. Rau fired one shot from his shotgun through the passenger side window, hitting Baylis in the right side of his head.

When police took Baylis into custody, they discovered he was wearing a ballistic jacket and had four explosive grenades attached to his body.

A handgun, an AK-47 assault rifle and several ammunition cartridges were recovered from both inside and outside of the truck. At least 45 empty shell casings were found in the parking lot.

No motive for the shooting was immediately known, and it is not known whether Baylis knew any of the victims, Drake said.

The shooting sent shock waves through Colorado Springs, which is normally a 'sleepy town,' Drake said. She noted that only eight such incidents have occurred in the past 15 years.

'It's been several years since something like this has happened,' Drake said. The last multiple shooting occured in January of 1988, when a man shot himself after killing his wife, Drake said. 'Even then, it wasn't as severe as this,' she added.

The five wounded were identified as Gerald Cooper, 37, listed in serious but stable condition after being shot in the leg; Alan Daniels, 33, listed in critical and stable condition after being shot in the face and neck; Kenneth Inman who is in stable condition after being shot in the hand; Andrew Kernan, 22, in serious but stable condition after being shot in the hand and groin; and Melody Spring, 27, who was treated and released after having her earing shot off and suffering from a minor metal fragment cut in her neck.

Baylis was in stable condition and remains hospitalized under guard.

Rau, a 19-year-veteran officer, has been placed on routine administrative leave. Detectives continued an investigation Sunday, interviewing several witnesses to the shooting.
