Madonna, Davis, Close top worst-dressed list

LOS ANGELES -- Madonna's leather-and-chains mode of dress -- and undress -- won her the top spot Tuesday on Mr. Blackwell's list of 'Worst-Dressed Women of 1992.'

The fashion maven gave the No. 2 prize to Oscar-winner Geena Davis, calling her flouncy, frilly dress for last spring's Academy Awards 'a Folies Bergere fiasco.'

Third place went to award-winning actress Glenn Close of 'Fatal Attraction' and 'Reversal of Fortune.' Blackwell said Close looked like 'Dracula's daughter strikes again.'

Other celebrities on his 33rd annual catastrophic clothing cattle call include: Delta Burke, Sinead O'Connor, Shirley MacLaine, Juliette Lewis, Demi Moore, Goldie Hawn and LaToya Jackson.

Blackwell minced no words in dressing down singer-actress-sex symbol Madonna's get-ups. He called her a 'bare-bottomed bore of Babylon,' 'an 'over-the-hill Lolita, sinking in a sea of sleaze,' and a 'masochistic monstronsity.'

He gave Davis, the tall red-headed star of 'A League of Their Own' and 'Thelma & Lousie,' the nickname 'Big Bird in heels.'

He likened Burke's new western look on her hefty frame to an 'earthquake at the OK Corral.'

Of Irish singer O'Connor's shaved head and rumpled robes, the fashion designer said: 'No tresses, no dresses -- the High Priestess of Pretense downright depresses.'

Blackwell told a packed news conference in his Hancock Park home that the fashion scene is distressed because what looks 'terrible' has become fashionable.

Amid all the poorly dressed, Blackwell singled out 10 women he said are the 'fabulous fashion independent for 1992':

Grammy nominee Vanessa Williams; 'Entertainment Tonight' interviewer Leeza Gibbons; Princess Diana; actresses Annette Bening, Elizabeth Taylor, Angela Lansbury, Catherine Deneuve and Michelle Pfeiffer; model Claudia Schiffer; and Queen Sofia of Spain.

In years past, Taylor had a place on Blackwell's worst-dressed list. 'There is hope for improvement,' he said.

But the highlights of haute couture always are overshadowed by Blackwell hissing and sneering through his worst-dressed list.

He deemed 'Used People' star Shirley MacLaine 'a carrot-topped tragedy.'

Blackwell singled out the young star of the remake of 'Cape Fear' as his seventh worst-dressed female, citing her head-clinging braids paired with an antique sheath dress at last year's Oscar ceremonies. 'Juliette Lewis is a corn-row catastrophe above -- a Bohemian bomb below,' he bellowed.

He also lit into 'A Few Good Men' star Demi Moore, who twice has posed nude for covers of a national magazine.

'What can I say about the vamp of Vanity Fair? Moore...is less. Period!' he said.

Of the bubbly blonde 47-year-old Hawn, Blackwell lamented, 'In jeans that jiggle and tops that plunge, Goldie's become the Goddess of Grunge. '

And at the bottom of the worst-dressed list, Blackwell flayed Michael Jackson's sister, LaToya, calling her 'a hymn to Halloween -- 365 nightmares a year.'
