CBS big winner in technical Daytime Emmys

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- CBS was the big winner, pulling down 14 technical awards, during the warmup to the 18th Daytime Emmy Awards. The off-beat children's show, 'Pee-Wee's Playhouse,' was the top show with four awards.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences presented national Daytime Emmy Awards in 33 technical categories Saturday night for programs and individual achievements.

The non-televised program was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Emmys in 17 categories, primarily performances and programs, will be presented at the 18th annual telecast Thursday. The program, to be shown on CBS, will be hosted by Bob Barker.

CBS's 14 technical awards outpaced all other networks. Syndicated shows won seven awards, ABC and PBS won four each, NBC won three and Disney won two.

'Pee-Wee's Playhouse,' created by the comic known as Pee-Wee Herman, won four awards, including recognition for graphics and title design, art and set direction, and sound mixing.

The CBS daytime drama 'The Young and the Restless' won three awards, including honors for technical direction and videotape editing.

Other notable winners were the game show 'Jeopardy!' for outstanding directing of a game/audience participation show, and 'the Oprah Winfrey Show' for outstanding directing in a talk/service show.

Disney's 'Jim Henson's Mother Goose Stories' won for outstanding directing in a children's series, and in the 'special class' category for directing, the ABC After School Special, 'The Perfect Date,' took top honors.

The Henson show also won for outstanding costume design. The syndicated show 'The Munsters Today' won the top award for both hairstyling and makeup.
