Fan dies while trying to do handstand

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A fan attending the Kansas City Royals-New York Yankees baseball game last night was killed when he tried to do a handstand on an upper deck railing and fell to his death, club officials said.

Mike Wurzer, 20, of Kansas City, Mo., was flow by helicopter to Kansas City's Truman Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, nursing supervisor Virginia Erickson said.

Wurzer had a broken neck.

According to witnesses, Wurzer apparently leaned over a railing above a third-deck entryway in the eighth inning while attempting the handstand and fell onto a concrete floor about 12 to 15 feet below, said Herk Robinson, Royals vice president for administration.

Wurzer, who was part of a crowd of 35,173, became the first fatality since the 41,000-seat stadium opened in 1973.
