CBS dominates daytime Emmy nominations

BURBANK, Calif. -- CBS dominated the field Thursday in the 15th annual Daytime Emmy awards nominations with 69, including 14 each for its children's series 'Pee-wee's Playhouse' and the soap opera 'As the World Turns.'

NBC was a distant second with 46 nominations, including 13 for its soap opera 'Santa Barbara.' ABC earned 36 nominations, led by its soap opera 'All My Children' with 11 nominations.

PBS got 28 nominations in all, including seven for its long-running children's series 'Sesame Street' and six for another children's series, '3-2-1 Contact.'

Syndicated talk-show programming was dominated by 'The Oprah Winfrey Show,' which earned five nominations, including one for its host, Oprah Winfrey.

The 15th annual Daytime Emmys will be broadcast live by CBS June 29 from New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

Non-televised awards in creative arts categories will be presented June 26 at an invitational luncheon at the Registry Hotel in Los Angeles.

CBS's Saturday morning series 'Pee-wee's Playhouse' was the pace-setter among nominations for all daytime programming. The program earned nominations for children's series, for its host, comedian Pee-wee Herman, for writing, directing, art direction, set decoration-scenic design, cinematography, music direction, makeup, hairstyling, videotape editing, film sound editing, film sound mixing and costume design.

'Pee-wee's Playhouse' is competing against PBS's 'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood' and 'Sesame Street' for the children's series Emmy.

The long-running CBS soap opera 'As the World Turns' is competing against ABC's 'All My Children' and 'General Hospital,' NBC's 'Santa Barbara' and CBS's 'The Young and the Restless' for drama series Emmy.

'As the World Turns' also earned nominations for lead actors Elizabeth Hubbard and Larry Bryggman, supporting actress nominations for Eileen Fulton and Lisa Brown, an ingenue nomination for Julianne Moore, younger leading man nominations for Scott Defreitas and Andy Kavovit and nominations for directing, technical direction, electronic camera, live and tape sound mixing and sound effects.

Nominees for lead actress in a drama series also included Susan Lucci of ABC's 'All My Children,' Erika Slezak of ABC's 'One Life to Live,' Helen Gallagher of ABC's 'Ryan's Hope' and Marcy Walker of NBC's 'Santa Barbara.'

Other nominees for lead actor in a drama series were Robert Gentry and David Canary of ABC's 'All My Children,' Stephen Nichols of NBC's 'Days of Our Lives' and A. Martinez of NBC's 'Santa Barbara.'

Besides Walker and Martinez, the popular 'Santa Barbara' soap earned supporting actress and actor nominations for Robin Mattson, Justin Deas and Nicolas Coster; an ingenue nomination for Robin Wright, a younger leading man nomination for Ross Kettle and nominations for writing, music direction, makeup, hairstyling and lighting direction.

ABC's nominations leader 'All My Children' earned a supporting actress nomination for Ellen Wheeler, supporting actor for Mark La Mura, an ingenue nomination for Lauren Holly, younger leading man for Robert Duncan McNeill and nominations for writing, music direction and videotape editing.

The leading nominee among game shows was another CBS entry, the long-running 'The Price is Right,' which is competing against another CBS entry, 'The $25,000 Pyramid' and NBC's 'Wheel of Fortune' and 'Win, Lose or Draw' for the game-audience participation show Emmy.

'Price' got other nominations for host Bob Barker, art direction, set decoration, technical direction and electronic camera.
