DIVORCE THE HARD WAY

By WILLIAM C. TROTT, United Press International

With the exception of the Joan Collins-Peter Holm split, the case of Oscar-winning director William Friedkin and actress Lesley-Anne Down may be the most complicated divorce in the entertainment world at the moment. Down, 33, appeared in a Los Angeles court and was told that the matter will go to trial sometime in late August.

Down has Mr. Palimony, Marvin Mitchelson, handling her case, which promises a rousing battle for the custody of the couple's son, Jack, 5. 'There will be an intense custody fight over their son,' said Mitchelson. 'The trial will take a long, time -- probably 20 days or more.' Friedkin, 48, who won an Academy Award for his direction of the film 'The French Connection,' filed for divorce in 1985 after the British-born Down allegedly took their son to London without his approval.
