Tammy Wynette to enter Betty Ford Center

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Singer Tammy Wynette will enter the Betty Ford Center to battle a dependence on prescription drugs she has acquired over the years, a spokesman announced Monday.

Wynette, whose hits include 'D-I-V-O-R-C-E' and 'Stand By Your Man,' will enter the Ford Center in Palm Springs, Calif., on Tuesday and will remain there about six weeks.

She has canceled her appearances for the rest of the year.

'Over the past few years Tammy Wynette has undergone numerous surgeries and in recent years has fallen into what she terms 'a trap' by forming a dependence on prescription pain killers,' said a statement released by her publicist, Kent Arwood.

'She is in excellent spirits and looking forward to resuming her touring and concert schedule early next year,' Arwood said.

Wynette has been hospitalized more than a dozen times in recent years for stomach problems. Arwood said he was not told the types of prescription drugs Wynette had developed a dependence on.
