The addition of 30 theaters in the last week of summer helped the adventure-drama regain the lead. It is now playing on 1,357 screens, more than any other current film.

Dropping to second place after a three-week run at the top was 'Stand by Me,' the story of four adolescent boys growing up quickly on a weekend camping trip, directed by Rob Reiner.

'Stand by Me' grossed $3 million in 829 theaters for a seven-week gross of $24.3 million. It led all the movies in the top 10 in per-screen gross with $3,654. Made at a cost of $8 million, the Columbia film already is in profit.

The two leading films showed a 9 percent and 1 percent increase respectively in theater admissions over the preceding week.

No. 4 was 'The Fly,' which pulled in $1.5 million. It dropped 17 percent from the previous week's take, losing 74 theaters in the process. In six weeks it has grossed $31 million.

Slowly climbing the box-office rankings was 'Nothing in Common,' the comedy-drama starring Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason. It was No. 5 with a gross of $1.5 million, bringing its eight-week total to $28.5 million.

The only new films to appear in the top 20 last week were 'The Men's Club,' No. 9, and the critically heralded 'Blue Velvet,' No. 13.

The national box-office gross for the week was $45.9 million, an improvement over last year's $40 million for the same time frame.
