ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- Neil Hamilton, Paramount Studio's dashing leading man during the silent film epoch and later the white-haired police commissioner on television's 'Batman,' died Sept. 24 in his home.

He was 85.

It wasn't until 1923, when he was cast in D.W. Griffith's 'The White Rose,' that Hamilton's chiseled good looks were discovered to be commercially viable. In 1929, he made six movies, including 'The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu,' and the following year he starred with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in 'The Dawn Patrol.'

His final film was 'Which Way to the Front' in 1970.
