Camera cited in accidental death

PALMYRA, Maine -- A man whose body was found on a rural camp road last week apparently died when he slipped trying to jump into a truck and impaled himself on a camera he was carrying, authorities said Saturday.

Gary Lawrence, 21, of Oakland was found dead shortly before midnight Thursday on a camp road in Palmyra.

Somerset County Sheriff's detective Daniel Lowe said the incident was still officially under investigation, but it appeared to be a freak accident.

An autopsy revealed that Lawrence died instantly when the camera pierced his chest and ruptured internal organs.

Investigators said Lawrence was running after a pickup truck, and apparently lost his footing when he tried to hop aboard.
