Police chief suspended after arrest

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Police Chief John C. Kirwan was suspended from his job Tuesday after he was arrested by his own officers and charged with drunken driving, a police spokesman said.

Officers arrested Kirwan about 9:50 p.m. Monday in a parking lot after 'there was an accident involving two other vehicles that were parked,' Sgt. Alan Doherty said.

Kirwan, 56, of Medford, was charged with operating under the influence of intoxicating liquor, released on bail and ordered to appear in Somerville District Court for arraignment Thursday.

City Manager John Ghiloni suspended Kirwin indefinitely with pay pending an investigation of the incident.

Police received a citizen's complaint about the accident, responded to the Mystic Valley Towers and arrested Kirwan in the parking lot.

Kirwan was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford for treatment of minor injuries and released.
