NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Syvasky Poyner, convicted of killing five Virginia women in 11 days, received his fifth death sentence Wednesday and promised to die 'like a man.'

Circuit Judge Fred Bateman sentenced Poyner, 29, to die Feb. 15 for the shooting death and robbery of Vicki Ripple, 17, an ice cream clerk.

Appeals to higher courts are expected to delay his execution.

'I do not hold any hatred to you or the commonwealth,' Poyner told the judge 'If I am to die, I will face the electric chair like a man. My soul is right and I will go on to be with my mother.'

Poyner had said very little during his previous trials and sentencing hearings.

Miss Ripple was murdered Jan. 31 during a series of killings that spanned an 11-day period. All the victims were robbed and killed with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Poyner told police his wife was pregnant.

'She needed money and wanted to get out from her mother's place,' he said. 'I told her I would see what I could do to try and help out.'
