DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania -- A member of the guerrilla African National Congress was sentenced to 13 years in jail for causing the car accident death of Tanzanian Prime Minister Edward Sokoine, Radio Tanzania said Tuesday.

The trial took place at Morogoro, 120 miles west of Dar Es Salaam, the scene of the fatal April 12 accident.

Sokoine, in line to become the next president of Tanzania following the expected retirement of Julius Nyerere in 1985, was killed instantly in the crash.
