IOWA CITY, Iowa -- George Raveling, a member of Olympic basketball coach Bobby Knight's staff, said Louisville's Lancaster Gordon has emerged as the top contender to become a starting guard on the 1984 team.

But the Iowa coach told a news conference Thursday the coaching staff is having trouble finding the right backcourt combination as it prepares for a second round of tryouts starting May 10 in Bloomington, Ind.

'At this point, the issue is unsettled,' Raveling said. 'No one other than Lancaster Gordon has risen to the top of the crowd.'

Raveling refused to talk about any other guards in the Olympic camp, saying he had been told by Knight not to refer to specific players.

The other players being considered only at guard are: Leon Wood, Fullerton State; John Stockman, Gonzaga; Alvin Robertson, Arkansas; Terry Porter, Wisconsin-Stevens Point; Steve Alford, Indiana; Johnny Dawkins, Duke; Vern Fleming, Georgia, and Maurice Martin, St. Josephs, Pa.

Raveling said Knight won't necessarily be choosing the best talent as his starters, but he will select the players who best fit into his system.

'I know when the first cut was made, an NBA scout told me that we just cut four first-round draft picks,' Raveling said.

Raveling said the coaches plan to cut the current list of 20 Olympic hopefuls to 16 by mid-June.
