ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Two competing comic book collectors are entangled in litigation, with one charging the other damaged his reputation by calling him 'comic fandom's first real business predator.'

The lawsuit was filed Thursday by former comic collecting magnate Alan Light, founder of 'The Buyer's Guide' for comics fans.

Light was described as 'comic fandom's first real business predator,' by competing comic collector Gary Groth in an editorial in Groth's magazine heralding Light's exit from the comic business.

Light sold his magazine rights last year and Groth responded with the stinging editorial in his own 'Comic Journal' publication based in Stamford, Conn.

'We don't have Alan Light to kick around anymore,' began Groth's May 1983 editorial. 'His career in hustling is a monument to selfish opportunism and spiritual squalor, the kind of overnight American success story revered by the envious and deified by moneyed barbarians.'

Light called the accusations untrue and claims they damaged his name and business reputation.
