NEWPORT, R.I. -- A funeral will be held Wednesday for James Cagney Jr., 44, the adopted son of actor James Cagney.
The younger Cagney died Friday of a heart attack in Washington, D.C.
Marge Zimmermann, the 84-year-old actor's secretary, said Cagney had become estranged from his son in a dispute after he gave him property on Martha's Vineyard two years ago.
The senior Cagney had just finished filmed a CBS movie, entitled 'Terrible Joe Moran,' about a family reunion. He also had an adopted daughter who 'went her own way,' Zimmermann said.
'It is very sad,' she said. 'For anybody that's got any fame, any money, there's tragedy. Why?'
It was not known whether the actor would attend his son's funeral.
The younger Cagney, a resident of Newport, was survived by his wife, Anne Mizerek, a daughter Casey and a son, Jonathan, all of Newport, in addition to his adopted parents.
His funeral will be at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newport.
