BRANDON, Fla. -- Mark Workman, a former All-America basketball player at the University of West Virginia, died Wednesday at his home following a long illness. He was 53.

Workman, a native of Logan, W.Va., was voted into the West Virginia Sports Writers' Hall of Fame in 1974.

Workman was a center at Charleston High School and at WVU, averaging 32.8 points per game as a senior in 1948. He scored 63 points in a sectional tournament game that season.

He averaged 26.1 for the Mountaineers in 1951. The following season, he averaged 23.1 points and 17.5 rebounds and was named to an All-America team that included such greats as Clyde Lovellette and Cliff Hagan.

He is the ninth leading scorer in WVU history: 1,553 points in three seasons.

Workman played in the NBA for two seasons, with the Philadelphia Warriors in 1953 and the Baltimore Bullets in 1954.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Keys Workman, and a sister, Janice Clark of St. Albans.

A memorial service is scheduled Friday in Hillsboro Memorial Gardens at Brandon.
