Jodie Foster fined for cocaine

BOSTON -- Actress Jodie Foster was detained briefly and fined for possession of $100 worth of cocaine as she arrived at Logan International Airport, but no charges were filed, a U.S. Customs official said.

'She was not arrested.

It was handled administratively, like it would be for anyone,' said Chris Nelson, special agent in charge of the Customs office in Boston.

Miss Foster, 21, a senior on leave at Yale University, arrived Monday on a flight from Paris en route to the West Coast. Agents found the single gram of cocaine 'during a routine Customs inspection,' Nelson said.

The drug, valued at about $100, was confiscated, Nelson said, but both federal and local authorities declined to press charges.

'Everybody down the line declined because it was such an insignificant amount. She was administratively fined and let go. I have no idea what the fine was,' Nelson said.

'She's had enough with (John) Hinckley. I don't think she should be treated any differently.' Presidential assailant John W. Hinckley, who became obsessed with Miss Foster after seeing her in the movie 'Taxi Driver,' has admitted he tried to kill President Reagan in March 1981 to win the actress's love.

Miss Foster, who recently finished filming 'Hotel New Hampshire,' missed her connecting flight to the West Coast when she was detained.

A Yale spokesman in New Haven, Conn., said Miss Foster was on a leave of absence from the school and was not due back until February.

Ms. Foster has said her goal is to graduate from Yale with honors.

Howard R. Lamar, dean of Yale, said the school would not take any action against Ms. Foster because of the incident, 'until we hear the outcome of it, then decide if there is something to do about it.'
