Last slain child buried

SALT LAKE CITY -- Family members sobbed and wailed, 'I want my baby!' as Alonzo Daniels, the first boy abducted in the mass murder of five Utah children, became the last to be buried.

About 200 people Monday attended the boy's funeral at Calvary Baptist Church.

Alonzo's body was unearthed from a shallow grave last week, along with the remains of four other young boys who disappeared during a four-year period.

Arthur Bishop, 30, Salt Lake City, is charged with capital homicide and kidnapping in the five deaths, which began in 1979 and ended last month.

Four-year-old Alonzo, who disappeared Oct. 16, 1979, is the only one of the slain children Bishop is not charged with molesting.

The Reverend France Davis told the mourners, 'We could become hardened and callous, or we could share our sorrows with the Lord. The Lord has prepared a home for Alonzo.'

His mother, Debbie Fisher, identified at the funeral as Debbie Johnson, wore black and wept throughout the services. As singers honored Alonzo with gospel music, family members cried out, 'Not my baby! I want my baby!'

A family friend, Dion Crenshaw, said Alonzo 'had the spirit to enjoy life and always had a smile on his face. We should smile now because we know Alonzo is at rest.'

'As a tribute to Daniel we should love our kids even more,' he said.

Davis said although the family is saddened by Alonzo's death, they are comforted knowing he is with the Lord.

'There is something very special about a child. Do we put too much hope in our children, so that when tragedy strikes we are hurt beyond measure?' he asked.

Alonzo, the first child abducted, was the last of the five boys to be buried. Funeral services were held Friday for Graeme Cunningham, 13, who disappeared July 14; Troy Ward, 6, who disappeared on his birthday June 22; and Claude Petersen, 11, who vanished Nov. 8, 1980.

Danny Davis, 4, abducted from a South Salt Lake supermarket Oct. 20, 1981, was buried Saturday.

Douglas Bishop, a brother of the man charged with killing the five boys, waived extradition Monday to return from Elko, Nev., to Orem, where he is charged with sodomy in a sexual assault on a boy.

Bishop, 23, has not been implicated in the mass murder of the boys but investigators are looking to see whether there is any connection. He was arrested in Wendover, Nev., Thursday -- the day charges were filed against him.

The younger brother appeared in district court and told Judge Joseph McDaniel he would not fight extradition. The judge gave Utah authorities until Aug. 5 to pick up Bishop, who is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
