Foreign press nominates top films and TV shows

HOLLYWOOD -- The year's first film awards nominations, the Golden Globes, were announced Monday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association with 'Gandhi,' 'Tootsie,' 'E.T. The Extraterrestrial' and 'An Officer and A Gentleman' leading the field.

The Golden Globe Awards, voted on by a small group of foreign correspondents covering Hollywood, will be held Jan. 29 and are often a harbinger of awards to come later in the year, including the esteemed Academy Award Oscars.

Nominated for best dramatic picture were 'E.T. The Extraterrestrial,' 'An Officer and a Gentleman,' 'Sophie's Choice,' 'Missing' and 'The Verdict.'

Unlike most other awards, the Golden Globe distinguishes between dramatic films and comedy, creating categories for both.

For best comedy or musical film, the nominations were 'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,' 'Diner,' 'My Favorite Year,' 'Tootsie' and 'Victor-Victoria.'

Nominees for best dramatic actress were Diane Keaton for 'Shoot The Moon,' Jessica Lange for 'Frances,' Sissy Spacek for 'Missing,' Meryl Streep for 'Sophie's Choice,' and Debra Winger for 'An Officer and a Gentleman.'

Nominees for best dramatic actor were Albert Finney, 'Shoot the Moon;' Richard Gere, 'An Officer and a Gentleman;' Ben Kingsley, 'Gandhi;' Jack Lemmon, 'Missing,' and Paul Newman, 'The Verdict.'

Nominess for best actress in a comedy or musical were Julie Andrews, 'Victor-Victoria;' Carol Burnett, 'Annie;' Sally Field, 'Kiss Me Goodbye;' Goldie Hawn, 'Best Friends;' Dolly Parton, 'Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,' and Aileen Quinn, 'Annie.'

Nominees for best actor in a comedy or musical were Dustin Hoffman, 'Tootsie;' Peter O'Toole, 'My Favorite Year;' Al Pacino, 'Author, Author;' Robert Preston, 'Victor-Victoria' and Henry Winkler, 'Night Shift.'

Nominated for best foreign picture of the year were 'Fitzcarraldo (Germany) 'Gandhi' (England-India), 'The Man From Snowy River' (Australia), 'Quest For Fire' (Canada-France), 'La Traviata' (Italy), and 'Yol' (Switzerland-Turkey).

Nominated for best director were Richard Attenborough, 'Gandhi;' Costa Gravas, 'Missing;' Sideny Lumet, 'Verdict;' Sydney Pollack, 'Tootsie,'and Steven Spielberg, 'E.T. The Extraterrestrial.'

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association also polls its readers for their favorite TV shows. The nominees this year are 'Dallas,' 'Dynasty,' 'Hart to Hart,' 'Hill Street Blues' and 'Magnum P.I.'
