Afterward, 'He mumbled something about taking up jogging. Then we walked home,' said his wife, Andrea.

Thornton, 33, of Minneapolis, walked back and forth across the Washington Street bridge over the Mississippi River from 2:30 p.m. Friday to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. He stopped for a few rest periods, but did not sleep. He averaged about 6.2 mph.

The trek erased a record that stood 22 years, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, which listed the record holder as Huw Neilson of Surrey, England, who walked 133 miles on Oct. 14-15, 1960.

Thornton, a machine design student, embarked on the walk to attract money and attention for a group he is founding, the American National Physical Fitness and Endurance Corp.
