HOLLYWOOD -- Sol C. Siegel, long-time movie producer and former head of production at MGM Studios died Wednesday. He was 79.

Siegel's hits included 'High Society,' 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,' 'Three Coins in the Fountain' and 'What Price Glory.'

He died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center following a heart attack.

Siegel was born in New York City and joined Consolidated Films in 1932. Two years later he moved to Hollywood to join his brother Moe's fledgling Republic Pictures.

Siegel moved to Paramount Pictures in 1940 to produce features and in 1946 he became a producer at 20th Century-Fox.

In 1955 Siegel became MGM's first independent producer and from 1958-62 he was vice president in charge of production for the studio. Under his reign the studio produced 'How The West Was Won,' one of the major Cinerama movies. He ran his own production company from 1964-67.

Siegel is survived by his wife, Helen, and sons, Andy, Norman and Rick, who are all in the film or television industry. His funeral will be private.
