LOS ANGELES -- In a story about Synanon founder Charles Dederich on Aug. 9, UPI incorrectly reported that Dederich earlier pleaded no contest to placing a rattlesnake in a lawyer's mailbox.

Dederich was charged and convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation to commit kidnapping and assault, but was not charged with actually placing the snake in the mailbox.

Two other Synanon members were convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and assault with a deadly weapon for the attack following no-contest pleas, and with Dederich were sentenced to short terms in county jail.
