LOS ANGELES -- The county Federation of Labor sanctioned a cartoonists' strike against major animation studios Tuesday, allowing other unions to honor their picket lines.

The strike by the 1,600-member Motion Picture Screen Cartoonists Local 839 began Aug. 5 after negotiations snagged on the so-called 'runaway clause' requiring studios to hire all cartoonists in the United States before exporting work abroad.

Studios affected include Disney, Filmation Associates, Warner Bros. Cartoons and Hanna Barbera Productions.

'I don't think it's going to be long,' cartoonists' spokesman Jeff Massie said of the strike.

'Things are far enough along on the minor issues...that they're going to get down to the nitty gritty,' he added.
