'Raiders' rings up seven Saturn Awards

HOLLYWOOD -- Steven Spielberg's 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' racked up seven honors including Best Fantasy Film and best actor, actress and director in the ninth annual Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films awards show.

The adventure movie, which won five Oscars, picked up top Saturn Awards Tuesday night for Spielberg, the biggest money-making director in film history, and for actor Harrison Ford and actress Karen Allen.

Its other awards went to John Williams for music, Lawrence Kasdan for writing and Oscar-winning Richard Edlund for special effects.

'American Werewolf in London' won two awards -- as Best Horror Film and for Oscar-winner Rick Baker for best make-up.

'Quest for Fire' also won two awards -- as Best International Film and a special award as Outstanding Film of the Year honoring its unique format.

Kirk Alyn, who played Superman in movies of the 1940s, presented the Best Science Fiction Film award to 'Superman II.'

'Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker' won the award as Best Low-Budget Film.

Best supporting actor and actress awards went to Burgess Meredith for 'Clash of the Titans' and Frances Sternhagen for 'Outland,' and Bob Ringwood won for best costumes for 'Excalibur.'

Special awards were given to veteran composer Hans Salter, whose work includes music for the old 'Frankenstein' pictures, and producer Ray Harryhausen, best known for the 'Sinbad' series.

'Time Bandits' was selected for another special award by Donald Reed, president of the academy, 'because of it's high artistic quality of production.'

Movies that received multiple nominations but won no awards included 'Dragonslayer,' 'Escape from New York,' 'Wolfen,' 'Dead and Buried,' 'Halloween II,' 'Haunting of Julia,' 'Heartbeeps' and 'Watcher in the Woods.'

The awards show at the Director's Guild theater on Sunset Boulevard was hosted by actress Sandahl Bergman, the female lead of 'Conan the Barbarian,' and Richard Lynch, co-star of 'The Sword and the Sorcerer.'

Celebrity presenters included author Ray Bradbury, actress Terry Moore and actors Dirk Benedict, Herve Villechaize and Sam Jones.
