NEW YORK -- Veteran actor Hugh Marlowe, a central character for 13 years on the NBC daytime drama 'Another World,' died Sunday of a heart attack at his Manhattan apartment. He was 71.

Marlowe, whose career boasted feature roles in such films as 'All About Eve,' 'Meet Me in St. Louis,' 'Twelve O'Clock High,' 'Bird Man of Alcatraz,' 'Elmer Gantry' and 'Rawhide,' had portrayed Jim Matthews on 'Another World' since 1969. His last appearance on the series was April 30.

Marlowe, who was born in Philadelphia and began his theatrical career in Chicago, created the original role of Ellery Queen both for radio and television.

He appeared in several Broadway productions -- among them, 'Arrest That Woman,' 'Kiss the Boys Goodbye,' 'Margin for Error,' 'Flight to the West,' 'A Land is Bright,' 'Lady in the Dark,' 'Voice of the Turtle' and 'Duet for Two Hands.'

He also appeared in Norman Mailer's Off-Broadway stage version of 'The Deer Park.'

Marlowe is survived by his wife, Rosemary, their son, Hugh Marlowe, Jr., and two sons from a previous marriage, Christopher and Jeff.

Funeral services will be private.
