COUNTRY BLUES

By JOAN HANAUER, United Press International

When country singer Dottie West divorced her drummer husband, Byron Metcalf, it was the woman who paid.

She agreed to give Metcalf $55,000 and shelled out another $10,000 to Metcalf's lawyer. He also gets to keep his drums, photographic equipment and a record player. She gets their home, a tour bus and a Cadillac. The divorce could have been a messy one, but Ms. West said she decided to settle 'mainly because of my schedule.' She added, 'I work. He doesn't.' Metcalf, who served as Ms. West's drummer and road manager, now is producing records as well as playing drums at a Nashville, Tenn., lounge.
